SBWApps

Custom app development

Every business deserves software built around how it works.

Most businesses run on tools that almost fit: a spreadsheet stretched too far, or three apps that don’t talk to each other. Custom software used to need a big budget. With AI it doesn’t, and we exist to build the tool that fits, or the product you could be selling.

34.9% of UK businesses with 10 or more staff now use AI, up from 11.9% in September 2023.

A working dashboard of the kind we build, on published data from the ONS, DSIT, HTTP Archive and Baymard Institute. A concept, not a client’s app.See it live

What we build

Custom apps, platforms and dashboards.

Not sure which one you need? You don’t have to be. Bring the problem and we’ll suggest the shape.

One booking, round the loop

Follow one booking through a small business.

Apps

A customer books online.

A web or mobile tool that does one job well, for your customers or your team. It replaces the workaround you’ve outgrown, or becomes something new to sell.

Platforms

The whole team sees it at once.

Several tools sharing one set of accounts, data and permissions. Everyone works from the same information, and nothing gets typed in twice.

Dashboards

The owner watches the day fill up.

One screen showing how the business is doing, drawn from data you already have. You spot a problem the day it starts, not at month end.

Automation

The confirmation sends itself.

The parts of an app that run on their own, like a confirmation or a reminder. Whole jobs handed to AI have a page of their own.

How we work

An AI-native app development process.

Checked before it’s quoted. Built fast with AI. Answered for by a person.

You deal directly with the founder from the first call to handover. AI agents write and test the code at speed, and the founder reviews everything before it ships.

Order, not time. Timings go in your scope.

  1. Free scoping call

Do you have an idea? Or want to fix a problem? We’ll ask you the right questions, and turn it into a product or a solution that makes sense.

  2. Feasibility check

Before we quote, we check three things.

Sometimes a spreadsheet, a form or a tool you already pay for is the better answer. If it is, we’ll say so.

    • Data

What the app needs to know, where that lives today, and whether you’re allowed to use it.

    • Connections

The systems it has to talk to, and whether they’ll let it.

    • Upkeep

Who runs it, fixes it and pays for it after handover.

  3. Written scope and quote

What we’ll build, the milestones, the timeline and the price, agreed in writing before work starts.

  4. Build and review

AI agents write and test the code. The founder reviews it and answers for what ships.

  5. Handover

The app, the code and everything you need to run it are 100% yours, with an agreed period of fixes included.

Every app gets its own timeline, written into the scope. A paid diagnostic is only for real uncertainty, and is quoted separately.

AI goes only where it earns its place, with code checking what goes in and what comes out. Where a simple rule will do the job, we use the rule.

Built for you, or with your team.

  • Built for you

We build it and hand it over. Best when you want the finished result and don’t need to know how it was made.

  • Built with your team

We build it alongside your people, so they can run it and change it without us. It takes more of our time, so it’s quoted higher.

Over half of staff use AI (55%). Only 11% of employers have trained most of them.

Questions

App development questions, answered.

How long does it take to build a custom app?

There is no standard timeline for a custom app: it depends on what the app has to do, the data it needs and the systems it connects to. We run a feasibility check first, then put the timeline in writing with the scope.

How much does a custom app cost?

The cost of a custom app depends on its scope, so every project is quoted individually and there is no price list. You only pay for what you need. If your budget is fixed, we shape the scope to fit it, and everything is agreed in writing before work starts.

How quotes work

Can a custom app work with the software we already use?

Often, yes. Many business tools let other software connect to them, and checking that is part of the feasibility check before we quote. Where a system won’t connect, we say so and suggest another route, such as an export or a simpler tool. You’ll know what connects before any work starts.

Should I build a custom app or buy software off the shelf?

Buy off the shelf when an existing tool does the job. Build custom when no tool fits, or when your way of working is what sets you apart. Most firms taking up AI buy it: DSIT figures show 65% planning off-the-shelf AI and 22% a bespoke build. If a spreadsheet or software you already pay for is the better answer, we’ll say so.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

No. You need a problem, not a plan: a job that eats hours, or something you’d like to sell. On a free scoping call we ask the questions, suggest the options and turn your answers into a short brief. Working out what to build is part of our job.

Do I have to pay for a diagnostic first?

No, most projects go straight from a free scoping call to a written scope and quote. A paid diagnostic is only for real uncertainty, such as an existing system to untangle or an idea that may not be buildable. It is quoted on its own, and you decide whether to go ahead.

Do I own the app once it’s built?

Yes, the app is 100% yours, including the code. There is no lock-in and no subscription, and nothing recurring starts by default. Handover and an agreed period of fixes are included. Who runs it and pays for it afterwards is settled before we quote, so there are no surprises.
