Quick answer: It depends on the job your website has to do. An AI website builder turns a few sentences about your business into a working site in minutes, for you to finish, edit and run yourself on its platform. A website built with AI is made for you: a person uses AI to design, write and code it, checks every piece, and hands you the files and the logins. If the website has to win work, look like nobody else's or belong to you outright, those are the jobs a built site is made for. The table below shows which one your business needs.
What is the difference between an AI website builder and a website built with AI?
An AI website builder is a product: you describe your business, it generates the pages, layout and copy, and the site lives on its platform. A website built with AI is a service: a person uses AI tools to design, write and code a site for you, checks what they produce, and hands you the files and the logins.
The two phrases sound almost identical, and both rely on the same kind of AI model. The difference is who makes the decisions, and who owns the result at the end.
Wix is a fair example of the first kind. Its AI website builder page says you describe what you want in a conversation, and that creating a site "typically takes just a few minutes". This website is the second kind: designed by us and built with AI, and here is how.
Which one fits your business?
Read each row and note which answer describes you. This is SBW Labs' proposed method, not a study: the rows are the questions worth asking before any website is started, and they leave price out on purpose, because the cheapest option is only cheap if it does the job.
| Your situation | Points to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need to be online this week, and a page or two will do | Builder | A working draft today beats a project with a start date |
| You will write your own words and choose your own photos | Builder | The words are most of the work, and a builder handles the rest |
| You want to change the site yourself, often, without asking anyone | Builder | Builders come with an editor made for exactly that |
| You are testing an idea before you put real money behind it | Builder | Prove there is demand first, then build properly |
| The site's main job is to bring in enquiries or bookings | Built | Someone has to design the route from first visit to contact, and test it |
| You need to stand apart from the competitor down the road | Built | A builder works within what it offers every customer |
| You want the site itself to be yours, free to move to any host | Built | Some of the best-known builders only run on their own servers (see below) |
| It has to connect to your booking, payments or customer records in a particular way | Built | With a builder, you are limited to what it supports |
| You do not have time to write the copy or make every decision alone | Built | Someone drafts, and you approve |
Mostly Builder? Your website's job is to be found and to say who you are, and a builder is made for that. Mostly Built? Your website has work to do, and it is worth having it made for you. A real mix usually means one question decides it: what should a visitor do once they arrive?
When is an AI website builder the right choice?
When speed and a low starting cost matter more than anything else, and the website is a shop window rather than a salesperson: a page that says what you do, where you work and how to get in touch. Some builders are free to start, so they are also a low-risk way to learn what you want from a website.
What a builder will not do is decide for you. It writes fluent copy, but it cannot know which offer should lead or what a nervous customer needs to read before they call. If you can answer that yourself, a builder will carry it well.
When is it worth having a website built with AI?
When the website has a job to do beyond existing. If it needs to turn visitors into enquiries, then the copy, the order of the pages and the route to the contact form all have to be designed, and someone has to test them end to end. Beautiful gets attention. Functional gets enquiries. AI makes that work faster. It does not make it optional.
A website made this way used to need a large budget and a large team. Now it needs one expert and the right tools, and that is why SBW Labs exists: every business deserves excellent digital work, and AI makes it possible. You work with the founder, a team of AI agents does the making, and a person checks every piece before it goes live.
It is also worth it when you want to own what you paid for. A built site should come with the code, the hosting account and the logins, so you can take it to another developer or host whenever you like. Ask for that in writing before you start.
A built site does not have to mean a long wait, either. At SBW Labs, a small site that is ready to build is planned at two weeks: ten working days from an agreed start, once your logo, photos and text, access to your domain, one person who can approve the work, and time to review it are all in place. Larger sites are planned at four to five weeks. How long it takes to build a website with AI explains what moves those dates, and how we build websites shows every step.
What should you check before you choose either?
Check whether you can leave. It is the question almost nobody asks on day one, and the answer is usually on the builder's own help pages:
- Wix says a Wix site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers". You can transfer a domain you bought through Wix to another provider, but the site stays behind, disconnected.
- Squarespace can export some content as a file for WordPress, but its export guide lists what does not come with it, including store pages, portfolio pages, video blocks, style settings and custom CSS.
None of this is a trick. Running everything on one platform is what lets a builder host, secure and update your site for you. It simply means leaving later is a rebuild, not a move, so it belongs in the decision now. Other builders work differently, so ask yours before you start.
Whichever way you go, check three more things before launch:
- The domain is registered to you, not to whoever set the site up.
- You can stand behind every claim. AI writes confidently, so read every number, qualification and promise on the page.
- It works on a phone. Open every page on your own phone, and send yourself a test enquiry.
What else do people ask?
Are AI website builders free?
Some are free to start. Wix says you can start building your site with AI for free, but asks for a paid plan before you can connect your own domain or take payments online. Check the builder's own pricing page on the day you sign up, rather than a review site's summary.
Will Google rank a website made with AI?
Google does not penalise a page for being made with AI. Its guidance on generative AI content warns against using AI "to generate many pages without adding value for users". Useful, accurate pages are judged on their merits, and nobody can promise a ranking, however your site was made.
Can you switch from a builder to a built site later?
Yes, and it is a sensible order to do things in. Plan to rebuild the pages rather than move them, keep the same domain, and redirect your old page addresses to the new ones so visitors and search engines can follow.
What about vibe coding a website yourself?
That is a third route: you describe the site to an AI coding tool, and it writes code you own and host. It needs more checking than a builder, because nobody has made the decisions for you. How to improve your website with AI shows what that looks like, and practical AI training teaches it on your own work.
Still not sure which way you lean? How we work sets out what you get, what we need from you and what happens at handover.
