Found in Neath. And in Swansea, next door?

A Neath website does half its job if only Neath finds it. Yours works when customers on both sides of the council line, in Skewen, Briton Ferry or Swansea, find you and get in touch. The free audit checks it, then we meet in Neath.

Your questions

Found in Neath, and over the line.

Why don’t customers in Swansea find my Neath business?

Partly distance, which is not yours to change: Google ranks local results by how well a business matches the search, how far it is from the person searching and how well known it is. What you control is the match: your website and Google Business Profile saying plainly that you serve Swansea as well as Neath. Swansea has 6,850 businesses registered for VAT or PAYE, more than twice Neath Port Talbot’s 3,115, so if you work there, name it. The audit checks whether your site and profile name every place you serve, on both sides of the line.

Should my website say Neath, or Neath Port Talbot?

Say the places your customers are in, as they would type them: Neath, Skewen, Briton Ferry, the Vale of Neath, Port Talbot, and Swansea if you go there. Neath Port Talbot is the council’s name, and on its own it does not say which towns you cover. The audit checks whether every place you serve is named in words on your site, not only Neath and not only in a postcode.

Can my business be on Google Maps if I work from home?

Yes. The map results come from Google Business Profiles, not websites, and Google’s guidelines say a business that goes to its customers should hide its home address and show the areas it serves instead. For a Neath business that might be Skewen, the Vale of Neath and Swansea alike. The audit says whether you have a profile, whether its service area covers your customers and whether it links to your website; setting one up is yours to do, and we can talk it through.

Is the meeting in Neath free?

Yes. The audit, the written page and the meeting are all free, with nothing to buy and nothing to sign. We agree a time and a place in Neath by email. Online is always there instead, wherever you are in the UK, and the audit is the same either way.

What to fix first
The changes that matter most, in the order we would make them.
  • Where we meet is decided once a time is set, and agreed by email. There is no office to invite you to, so none is published.

  • You keep the written audit, whatever you decide. Nothing to buy and nothing to sign.

  • Online is always there instead, wherever you are in the UK, and the audit is the same either way.

For Neath businesses

Every place you serve, named.

Neath is in Neath Port Talbot, a county borough of its own beside Swansea, which has more than twice as many businesses. Your customers may be on either side of that line, in Skewen, Briton Ferry, the Vale of Neath or Swansea itself, but a search matches a business to the places it says it serves.

Being found in Google’s map results needs a Google Business Profile. Google ranks those results by how well a profile matches the search, how far the business is from the person searching and how well known it is. A website alone cannot put you there, so the audit looks at your profile as well as your site, and says so if you have none.Google: tips to improve your local ranking
